Title - Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest and Edwinstowe 34K

"Lythe and listin, gentilmen,
That be of freebore blode;
I shall you tel of a good yeman,
His name was Robyn Hode."

(Attend and listen, gentlemen,
That be of freeborn blood;
I shall you tell of a good yeoman,
His name was Robin Hood.)
A Gest of Robyn Hode circa 1500

INTRODUCTION

The romantic and inspiring story of Robin Hood is told in a number of ballads, some of them very old. The ballads are more "English" than anything else in literature, and his character is dear to the English heart as he acts in ways which we all admire.

ROBIN HOOD, SHERWOOD FOREST AND EDWINSTOWE

Any study of the Robin Hood story is incomplete without a study of its most popular setting, Sherwood Forest. The ancient Sherwood Forest village of Edwinstowe is within walking distance of the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and makes a good base for a leisurely exploration of the forest itself.
